Damon Butler’s Motivation
How did you realize you really loved cosmetology?
Throughout high school, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. For a long time, I really wanted to go into acting. I was kind of getting discouraged a little bit because a lot of my friends were looking for colleges and stuff like that, and I kind of felt like the odd man out.
All my life, I’ve kind of had a weird passion for hair and makeup that I never really kind of put out into the world. But in my senior year, someone was like, “Why don’t you just go to beauty school? You’re really good at hair and makeup.” And I was like, “Hmm… I never really thought about that.” So, I went online, I looked up beauty schools, and Ogle was the very first one that popped up. I signed up really quickly and the next day, I was in for an interview. And so now, I’m here.
What made you choose Ogle School?
The first time I got here, we sat down for an interview. I brought my grandma. They asked me a bunch of questions. They asked me why I wanted to have a career in the beauty industry and stuff like that. Then they took me on a tour around the school, and I instantly fell in love with it. I was so obsessed with it. I went home and I was like, “This is what I want to do. I’m so excited.” It was so fun. Once I got in here, I realized everyone was so welcoming and so friendly. And this is actually the only beauty school I looked at. After this one, I didn’t really bother looking anywhere else, because I knew that this one was the one for me, and I was going to have a lot of fun doing it.
Who is your support team?
A lot of my friends are in college right now. They’re all spread out across Texas, but they’re all super supportive of me. We have a group chat and I send them everything I do in school. They’re always super supportive and they’re always like, “Why don’t you come down here and do my hair?” But I have a really good support group, and my friends here are so amazing. Everyone just kind of like feeds off of each other’s energy and everyone’s willing to help each other. Some people are great at braiding. Some people are really great at hair color. And everyone’s just really willing to give each other tips and tricks and stuff. Overall, it’s just a really good vibe that everyone has from each other.
What is your biggest motivation?
I didn’t have a lot of motivation before I started. My mom passed away when I was around 16. And so around that time is like when I kind of like… I don’t want to say gave up but I didn’t really care that much about what I wanted to do, because I was like, “Well, what’s the point? Every day is just another day. It doesn’t really matter.”
But my motivation kind of really picked up after I started going here and I realized I could make a really great career out of this. Before that, I really just didn’t care. I was kind of moving along, and I was like, “I’m going to do beauty school and maybe something will come out of it.” But after I got here, it really fueled my motivation to do really great things. I say that would be what hinders my motivation a lot, but ever since I started here, I’ve just been wanting to like, go, go, go, go. And heading towards graduation, it’s super exciting. I just kind of want to keep building up until I do something really cool here and really awesome.
What are you most passionate about?
I really, really want to be a colorist. I look up to a lot of famous colorists on YouTube, and that’s really what I want to do. Every time I get a hair color client, I get so excited. I’d say that’s what I’m most passionate about, is hair color. Definitely.
How would you describe your Ogle School experience?
This is the best school experience I’ve had. I went to high school in a really small town. Being in a school where everyone just wants to experiment and try new things, it’s just a really great vibe and I feel like I fit into it really well. In high school, I was always really soft-spoken. I never really wanted to get my ideas out there because everyone had their groups and I kind of didn’t really fit in anywhere. Once I got here and I realized everyone was just really open and ready to try new things, I was super excited. The instructors here are so great. I want to give a shout-out to Jenna, Voeckler, Miss P., Miss T., all you all. You all rock forever.
I’ve loved going to school here and I’m so excited about what I’m going to do in the future. It’s just been an overall really great experience. Anyone who’s thinking about coming to school here, I really encourage it. I don’t regret it at all. I’m super excited. Every day I wake up, I get to do something that I’ve always wanted to do. And it’s just super fun. I love it so much.
