How to Match Makeup with Tattoos

Your tattoos may be your creative expression or your way to make a statement. However, even when you have lots of ink, you can still create a flawless look with makeup.

In our tutorial on matching makeup to tattoos, we’ll show you that beautiful skin and tattoo ink can look so good together.

This makeup style is dramatic but simple. The smooth, clean skin, flared eyes, and well-contoured cheekbones provide excellent contrast to your tattoos. Here’s how to recreate this look at home.

Moisturize: When preparing your skin, the first step is to moisturize. We used Glossier Priming Moisturizer, which creates a good base for makeup application.

Skin Tone: Next, we minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines by applying Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional Face Primer. This is especially useful for your nose and cheeks, or other problem areas.

Foundation: To create the contrast between a flawless face and bold tattoos, we started with an even coat of foundation by using Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover.

Define Brows: By using a brow pomade, you can create striking, well-shaped eyebrows. Here, we used an angled brow brush to apply Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in an Auburn shade.

Eyeshadow: Using a metallic burgundy eyeshadow, shade in the eyelid from lash line to crease and add definition to the lower eyelid. For just the right about of metallic shimmer, we used Urban Decay Eyeshadow in the shade Roach.

Complementary Eye Color: To make the eyes pop, we added a second eyeshadow color, applying this lighter shade near the upper lash line and lower lash line. We used the Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly palette with the Peanut Brittle shade.

Eyeliner: Go bold and refined with your eyeliner to create a crisp line on you upper lid and balance out the strong contrast of your tattoos. Here, we used a gel eyeliner from Benefit Cosmetics called They’re Real! Push-Up Liner.

Bronzer: Now, start contouring your face with a sharply angled line of bronzer following your cheekbones. We used a matte bronzer from Too Faced in the shade Chocolate Soleil.

Blush: Add a rosy hue to your cheeks with Benefit Cosmetics’ Rockateur blush, blending the shade into the bronzer and dusting the nose, forehead, and chin for a sun-kissed look.

Finishing Powder: Set your makeup and create an overall matte look by dusting your face with Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder.

Highlights: Accentuate your contouring by adding pale metallic highlights at the top of your cheekbones near your temples and along your upper lip line. We used J.Cat Beauty’s Triple Crown Baked Highlighter in the Crème Brulee palette.

Lashes: For strong, well-defined lashes, use bold, black mascara such as Benefit Cosmetics’ Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara.

Lips: A single matte lip color makes a bold statement without distracting from your flawless skin or tattoos. This Kat Von D Bow N Arrow lipstick is a richly colored nude shade.

Accessorize with jewelry to complete the look that contrasts flawless face makeup with your tattoos.
