If there’s one thing that’s as important as a candidate’s stance on the big topics, it’s his or her haircut. We asked a professional stylist how the presidential hopefuls get their signature looks and how much each might cost the average voter. Pull off a presidential look of your own with the following guide.
Donald Trump: Extreme Combover
How to get Donald Trump’s haircut: Ask for shorter lengths all around with a deep side part on the left. Keep the middle long and prepare for the need to style daily.
Step 1: Apply a texture powder throughout the wisps of hair. Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder would add volume to the sparse areas.
Step 2: Blow-dry to activate the texture powder. Fluff the front piece down over the face to the right, then fold over gently at the middle, then bring the bottom of the length back up and over to the left as if you were folding cotton candy. This will create the illusion of fuller hair in sparse areas.
Step 3: Spray in place with a firm-hold hairspray.
Step 4 (Optional): With a new toothbrush, brush your eyebrows up and leave in the upward position.
Cost for on-demand stylist: $400
Hillary Clinton: Layered Bob
How to get Hillary Clinton’s haircut: Ask for a chin-length bob with subtle layers that have a blunt-looking finish at the ends. Bangs are wispy, worn to the side and end above the eyebrows.
Step 1: Prep damp hair with a grape-sized amount of volumizing mousse.
Step 2: Starting with damp hair and a 1.5” round barrel brush, blow-dry hair under, creating volume around the face.
Step 3: Set with a hairspray.
Cost for in-house blowout: $125 daily
Gary Johnson: Classic Business Cut
How to get Gary’s haircut: This is a no-nonsense men’s haircut, and its straightforwardness has worked for decades. Ask your barber to cut short in the back and on the sides.
Step 1: Crop the sides and back of the hair to be short and neat around the neckline, leaving about an inch of length on the top.
Step 2: Blast dry with a hair dryer.
Step 3: Use a pea-sized amount of styling wax on fingertips. Create texture in the longer length on the top, and sweep the front to the side.
Cost for a barber cut: $9.99, for styling wax: $7.99
Jill Stein: Grown-Out Pixie
How to get Jill’’s haircut: This no-fuss hairstyle is easy to manage and requires minimal styling. Ask your stylist for a pixie haircut that’s longer on the top.
Step 1a (optional): If you’re for Jill, then full commitment will require a dye change to vibrant silver-grey. It may instantly age you a few decades, but so will a few years in the White House.
Step 1: Wash hair with a shampoo made from fair-trade and organic ingredients, and towel-dry vigorously.
Step 2: Apply a light mist of volumizing spray to damp hair and comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
Step 3: Comb the damp hair into a slightly off-center parting and, using a 1” barrel brush, blow-dry the hair up and away from the face, creating bounce and volume down the parting.
Step 4: Tease hair into place around the neckline with fingertips. No finishing sprays are required.
Cost for volumizing spray: $9.99, for a wide-tooth comb: $15.99
