Pursuing a passion is more difficult for some people than for others. For some, obstacles can really pile up, making it difficult to pursue the thing that they’re most interested in doing. That’s what happened with Dennis Denzel, but with help from Ogle School and a strong desire to succeed, Dennis has been able to pursue his desires in the field of cosmetology. Keep reading to find out exactly how.
Dennis Denzel’s Experience
What made you realize you really loved cosmetology?
Really, it was the first time I went to the shop with my mom, back when I was a little kid. And she got out of the chair, and she looked so happy. I was like, “I want to do that. I wanted to make someone happy.”
What are you passionate about?
I love everything about the beauty industry. I’m passionate about the hair, the makeup, the fashion, just everything in the big picture. Just the whole big picture is what I’m passionate about.
What is your ultimate goal?
My dream is actually to be a brand. I want to be that brand that you see in the stores, or go to the salon, and you see the name. And I just want to be the best at what I can be.
Have you experienced obstacles in your schooling?
Honestly, a lot. This would be my third try at beauty school. I went back right after high school, around 2010, did it almost all the way through, had 900 hours, and had to drop out because financially, it just wasn’t working for me. And so, the obstacles are actually staying there, making sure you have everything set, like bills, work, and everything else, and staying focused and coming every day would be the hardest obstacle. And right now, I’m doing it, and I’m so happy about it.
Why did you choose Ogle School?
Well, I just moved here recently in January. Two years ago, my mom moved here, and she called me on the phone talking about beauty schools because she knew I was thinking about going back. She was like, “Hey, I keep hearing about this school named Ogle. You should research it and see if it’s in Michigan.” But I’m like, “Well, no, you hear it on the radio because you’re in Texas. I don’t think it’s in Michigan at all.” And then I came down here in November, last November, toured the school, did my research. I just made the move here around the end of December last year and just came here. And that’s how I heard about Ogle.
What is the most rewarding aspect of cosmetology?
The most rewarding aspect is actually having someone in your chair. They talk to you about everything, anything and everything, like you’re the stylist–kind of their psychiatrist. So, the most rewarding thing is you get to meet new people, get to know them. And after you get done with that, you make them feel beautiful with the work that you’ve done. If it’s makeup, if it’s hair, if it’s a facial, they feel good getting out of your chair because they let a lot off their shoulders.
What was a time when you made an impact on someone?
It was my second week on the floor here at Ogle. I had a young girl who came in and was just around school–school had just started. And she messed up her hair the night before the first day of high school. So, she tried to lighten it, and her hair was green. It turned out green. So, she came here to get it color corrected, so it could just get back healthy and everything. And she literally cried. Her mom cried once I got done with it. And just went on to school the next day, and everybody loved her hair.
What advice would you give someone who is interested in becoming a cosmetologist?
Just be you. All I have to say is come here with a plan. If you have big dreams, go for those big dreams. If you want to be a brand like me (I want to be a household name), make sure you start with putting yourself out there and get everything together, like cards, fliers, social media, Instagram. Instagram is big right now; learn to use it. It’s a social media world, so use that to your advantage.
