Hair
There’s a common misconception out there that brushing and/or styling your hair when it’s wet is just fine, and it doesn’t help that it is a convenient excuse when you’re running late and don’t have the time to wait for your hair to dry before running a comb through it. But wet hair is much more prone to breakage, unwanted stretching and split ends, and brushing and styling those wet strands will leave your mane damaged and lank. It’s best to wait for your wet tresses to dry before brushing. If you’re in too much of a hurry and simply can’t wait, towel dry your hair and run a wide-toothed comb through it to prevent breakage. You’ll also want to lightly saturate it with a thermal heat serum, like Wella’s Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray, to prevent any heat damage while styling with a blow-dryer or flatiron.
Skin Care
When it comes to skin care, one of the most common pieces of bad advice is that taking unregulated skin supplements to achieve healthy skin is safe. This is not the case. Consuming unregulated supplements is always a risky endeavor. Some over-the-counter supplements haven’t been subjected to FDA approval and could dangerously interfere with prescribed medications you may be taking. Instead, stick with only prescribed supplements and be sure to check with your doctor before taking anything. Flawless skin is great, but your health is the most important thing!
Eye Makeup
When trying to decide which color of eyeshadow to go with for a night out on the town, it can sometimes be very tempting to apply a little of all of them. And some might say go for it; use every single color in the pallet at the same time. We’re here to say: Don’t do it! Unless you’re a professional makeup artist, loading on a ton of different colors will look sloppy and tacky.
Opt instead for different shades of the same color. Start with a medium shade on the base of your lid, a lighter version beneath the brow line and the darkest hue to line the lid. This will give you a much cleaner and sophisticated look.
Lips
A misguided piece of lip advice is that lining your lips is outdated and totally unnecessary. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Lip liner is actually a lip savior in disguise. Lipstick runs the risk of bleeding outside your lips and not lasting half as long without the use of liner. So instead of choosing to go lip liner-free, add dimension to your lips with a shade of lip liner, like any of Bloom Cosmetics’ lip liners, that is close to or slightly darker than your selected shade.
Moisturizer
Moisturizing your wet skin to “seal in” the moisture seems like a bit of advice that would make sense. It’s sort of like doubling the moisture. But this is actually the wrong way to go. The process of adding moisturizer to already-wet skin will make it greasy and slippery, and you’ll also be forced to wait twice as long to dry off. Instead, always apply moisturizer after your skin has just dried, and allow it to fully settle in before getting dressed.
Nails
A “life hack” bit of advice that has been circulating the past few years is that you can successfully dilute chunky nail polish by adding nail polish remover to the bottle. This is not true! Nail polish remover will ruin your nail polish. Its purpose is to remove nail polish, so adding it to your polish bottle will only serve to break it down. What you want is nail polish thinner. This will thin out the polish without destroying it. Be sure to use it in small doses and remember to close the cap tightly after every application to prevent evaporation.
Leg Shaving
An age-old but ill-conceived trick for getting the closest and best shave possible is to shave up the leg. What many people don’t realize, until it’s too late, is that shaving upwards and against the grain causes nicks, cuts, irritation and ingrown hairs. For the truth concerning the best shave possible, shave downwards with the grain of the hair. If you want a closer shave, do it twice! And always remember to use a shaving gel or cream.
Toenails
When it comes to toenails, a very bad recommendation is to reach for cuticle trimmers, or tweezers, to remove cuticles for nicer-looking nails. Stay away from this advice! Your cuticles prevent infection, so trimming them away can open the door to nasty germs, along with damaged nails and pain. It’s best to just leave those cuticles completely alone. But if you really feel you must fix your cuticles, use a special cuticle tool to push them back very gently.
