People experience different obstacles when going through beauty school. For some people, it’s a breeze; for others, like Mister Reames, something can happen that makes school incredibly difficult, potentially even having to leave for a period of time. However, Mister was able to keep himself going. Read on to find out how he got back into school to complete his courses.
Mister Reames’ Story
What made you realize you really loved cosmetology?
What inspired me was basically seeing my grandmother as I was growing up, and her being a beautician, and basically, me becoming a stronger person through modeling. I enjoy being able to make someone feel that the way that they look on the outside fits in with the inside. That’s what inspired me to become a beautician.
What is your dream?
My dream is actually to be able to go all around the world, to share, basically, my style. My style is that cutting-edge, different look–to think outside the box of going from the regular look to something new always, and to know that it’s okay to do that and still be able to look appropriate even if you’re in a business industry, you can still step outside the box.
What was your biggest obstacle during your education?
Well, I actually started back in 2013. I had to leave school because I got in a real bad wreck. And on top of that, my outside world had gotten to my business, my professional life. I’m trying to make myself something in life, and I didn’t want to allow my outside world to defeat me.
I kept telling myself that through the whole time I was gone from here. I said, “I’m going to go back. I’m going to go back because, at the end of the day, I want something bigger and better for myself.” And I knew that this was the right place to come. I knew that they were going to be able to help me and not just be like, “Oh, this is what you need to do. Here you go.” And they send you on your way. But they’re actually right beside you each and every step. And if you have any questions, they ask you, “Will you need some help?” I just felt comfortable.
So, I kept telling myself, “I’m going to go back to that school. I’m not going to just choose another school to go to when I come back to school to finish my hours.” I said, “I’m going to go back to where I started and always finish.” Don’t ever start something and not finish it because it always makes you just seem like you’re a quitter.
How did you hear about Ogle?
I actually heard about Ogle watching television. I saw a commercial, and the same day I saw that commercial for Ogle, my best friend went to Ogle a year before I decided to go. And I was like, “I’ve heard of this school somewhere.” And he was like, “I went to Ogle.” I was like, “Oh, yeah, that’s right. You did go.” So, I was like, “You know what? Let me just go on and go,” I said because I kept seeing the commercials on TV, and then my friend went to Ogle.
And I said, “That’s a lot of different people that are known,” not like celebrities, but known that they were coming from this industry, going from Ogle to being something very popular in life. And I was like, I don’t really hear about other schools from people who were able to become what they wanted to be. So, I was like, “You know what? I’m going to give them a try.” And I’m glad that I did give them a try.
What is the most rewarding part of your education?
It’s what you want to take from it. The reason why I say that is because a lot of people were like, “Oh, I can’t do this. I’m not going to make it there.” That’s because you’re telling yourself that. Because as long as you tell yourself that you can, and “I can go here,” and “I can go there,” and “I’m going to be this,” and “I can be that,” you can. It’s always about looking ahead. It’s what you can do for yourself because as long as you can do for yourself, somebody else will help you.
Have you had any clients that you’ve made a significant impact on?
Well, I had a client that just came in. And she was just like, you know, she was looking down and everything. And I’m just like, “What’s wrong?” And she was like, “Well, for one, I’m having difficulties at home, and my husband’s not liking everything that’s going on.” And I just said, “Well, stop right there.” I said,” Well, let’s just go ahead and focus on what is going on with your hair for right now.” And then she was like, “That’s another reason why I am down–because I’m tired of the plain old look that I’m doing each and every day. I want something different, but I’m scared.” I said, “Will you allow me to put it in my hands, and trust me to just do something for you?”
At first, she was hesitant. But then she finally was just like, “You know what? I’m going to allow you to do it.” And I really did appreciate that she did that because she had like 22 inches of hair. And that’s really long. And so I cut it into a bob. She was scared at first when I cut her hair. She was like, “My hair is short. Oh, my gosh. I’m not going to like it.” I said, “Well, just wait. Let me style you out, and finish your color and everything.”
And as soon as I styled her out, she got to looking in the mirror. And she looked, put her glasses on. And she was like, “Wait a minute. I’m liking my hair.” And I’ve seen her from coming in, looking like she was about to cry, and walking out the door with a big old smile on her face.
