For many people, including Stephanie Nevels, cosmetology was something that allowed her to build relationships and discover what she loved. Why did you choose Ogle School?

They gave us everything we needed to know for our foundation, and then they built on that from Phase 1 up. Overall, it was just an amazing learning experience. We learned pretty much everything that we needed to know. It was very well-rounded.

What obstacles did you face during the schooling process?

While doing school, I was a mom too. When I started, my son was six months old. And during school, I actually went through a divorce. So I became a single mom all throughout school. There were definitely struggles here and there, but it wasn’t too crazy.

What advice would you give someone else going through cosmetology school?

It gets better. It definitely gets better. Just stick with it. Just take it day by day. Anyone that you’re going to school with, you are going to build such a strong relationship. And they’re going to be there to support you and motivate you. You build these great relationships in school to kind of help you through the hard times as well.

What is the most rewarding thing about cosmetology?

Being there for your clients. For them to look at you, and just thank you, and just be so appreciative of what you do for them. That’s definitely the most rewarding for me.

What do you love the most about your clients?

Your clients are going to be your best friends. You’re going to know everything about each other. They are just so rewarding and loving and they’re loyal. They’re real. It’s awesome.

Have you ever had an experience where you felt like you had a significant impact on someone else?

It was in school, and I had a mom come in. She had just finished up her last round of chemo and so had very thinning hair, grayish, just a dull color. And I got to sit her on my chair, give her a fresh color, a fresh look, a nice blowout. And she was in my chair just bawling because of how beautiful she felt afterward. That was the best feeling. Nothing can replace that. It was amazing.

Do you have any advice on marketing yourself as a cosmetologist?

When you’re out in public or looking for new clientele, sell your look. Have your hair done, your makeup done. Make it look like you are a hairstylist. Because if you just look like an everyday person, no one’s going to know. Everyone you meet, talk to them about it.
